Start with the reason it got wet
A ceiling can appear to dry between episodes while an intermittent fault remains. Before plastering or painting, establish what caused the water and what evidence supports the repair. Keep the investigation and repair records.
If the source is still uncertain, further assessment may be needed. Drying equipment can help manage moisture, but it does not repair a pipe, shower junction or roof defect.
Check the condition of the ceiling
Water-damaged plasterboard can lose strength, and saturated insulation or material in the void may stay wet after the visible surface changes. Bulging, sagging, softening or cracking needs professional assessment; keep clear until it is safe.
An electrician should assess affected electrical installations before reuse. Avoid disturbing textured coatings or older ceiling materials yourself; the repair professional can advise on any necessary material checks before work.
Why drying time varies
The amount of water, material thickness, airflow, temperature and moisture held in the void all affect drying. A small surface mark and a saturated ceiling assembly are not the same job. A fixed number of days would be misleading.
A drying or restoration specialist can assess the materials and monitor progress where needed. Use equipment according to professional and manufacturer instructions, especially around electrical equipment. Do not assume that a dry touch test establishes readiness to cover the area.
Agree what making good includes
Depending on the damage, work may involve drying, replacing affected materials, plastering, stain treatment and decoration. These steps may be carried out by different trades from the person who finds or repairs the leak.
Before booking, clarify whether the leak investigation includes opening-up, pipe repairs, temporary access protection, a report, or reinstatement. If insurance is involved, ask the insurer what they need approved or documented.
